Did You Know This About Industrial Wastewater Treatment?

Industrial wastewater treatment is a relatively new field. Hard to believe, right? Up until the middle of the 19th Century, wastewater of any kind, including sewage, was simply dumped into the nearest body of water. This meant that wastewater and drinking water were constantly being interspersed. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way since this practice was the norm, and the way we are able to keep our drinking water separate from wastewater is through wastewater treatment. Cortech is proud to be a part of the industry that keeps our water clean. It’s not easy though; there is a lot to consider about wastewater treatment.
In the mid-1800s, it was discovered that the main cause of many outbreaks of diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid were due to contaminated water. It was at this time that officials realized they needed to take action to keep drinking water safe for people to drink. Many steps were taken to limit and stop the discharge of wastewater into open bodies of water. This would help to control the amount of disease and other contamination from working their way into the groundwater used for drinking. Though this was a great first step, it still wasn’t enough. Cities were still dumping their waste into the nearest body of water and people were still getting sick. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Congress took action and passed legislation governing proper wastewater treatment policy because the detrimental effects to the environment and public health were reaching dangerous levels.
Since then, the goal of wastewater treatment has been to keep fresh water safe and clean for the population to drink. One effort is also geared towards making sure the clean water standards are met at all times and not just during inspection time. It is important that wastewater is disposed of and treated properly to protect the public from disease.
